I have to admit. I did not know that there are now “plastic surgery coaches.” However, this is apparently something that exists (probably started in California) to “demystify laymen and ‘put the beauty consumer in the driver’s seat.'”

Bay Area/Beverly Hills plastic surgery coach and author, Michele Garber is quoted in this post by Tony Bravo on SFGate, “A ‘nip/tuck’ coach’s golden safety rules,” and says she wrote her book, “Safety First, Your Guide To Safe Cosmetic Surgery” because nowadays the consumer of cosmetic procedures has many choices and it is important to get educated.

Hmm. That is true. I think I will read more and educate myself aboutpMichele Garber.

Her “10 Rules” are great advice, too:

  1. Only Go to a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.
  2. Do Your Own Due Diligence. [Research, Research, Research]
  3. Beware of Marketing Gimmicks.
  4. Only Have Your Surgery in an Accredited Facility.
  5. Technique Comes with Experience. Surgery is a Craft as well as an Art.
  6. Have a Clear Understanding of Costs and Liability of Revision Surgery.
  7. Speak to a “Real Patient” Who Has Had the Same Surgery.
  8. If You Don’t Like What You See in the Doctor’s Waiting Room – Run.
  9. Don’t Shop for Bargain Plastic Surgery.
  10. Committing to Cosmetic Surgery is Confusing, Emotional and Has Risks.

Even her reasoning for becoming a nip/tuck coach and the service she provides has validity. Michele was in PR with plastic surgeon and dermatologist clients and a training model for fillers and aesthetic devices. As a marketer of the providers andpa consumer of cosmetic procedures herself, Michele has been on both sides of the industry, which provides her with an education that the marketer-inside-her wants to promote.

As many cosmetic surgery patients will attest, once you have a procedure and word gets out, you have many friends (and even people you don’t know at all) ask you every question under the sun about cosmetic and plastic surgery. Many times these questions are less about your experience and more about plastic surgery in general, or even about what you think the doctor would recommend for this other person. Talk about a populace craving information!

Michele found a niche and a role that people would pay someone else to do. She does the research and educates her clients on the options available for their concerns. She finds and schedules consultations for her clients with reputable board certified plastic surgeons. She provides emotional support and guidance.

I am convinced that she provides a much needed service. I am easily convinced because we do these same things for all our patients … at no additional cost.
