So many women and men complain of the same issue with their midsection: a bulge right above their pant line that just won't go away.
Tummy tucks assist in resolving issues associated with excess skin and stretched muscles from:
- Major weight loss
Designed to remove the unsightly bulges and excess skin from your midsection, a tummy tuck also tightens the underlying muscles on your abdominal wall.
Why Won’t the Belly Flab Just Go Away?
What can look like a problem with too much fat may actually be the result of loose, excess skin and tissue. However, people will often treat the excess skin the same way as fat, trying to burn it off with exercise and nutrition. While this is good for your health and maintaining a stable weight, it will not do a whole lot for tightening up the skin.
Loose skin is not a problem that can be solved with some sort of magic product or targeted abdominal exercises. When your skin has been stretched over a long period of time, whether because of pregnancy or obesity, the skin will have lost elasticity and be unable to tighten up on its own. Oftentimes, the abdominal muscles are also stretched out which can cause your belly to protrude outwards. These are all physical problems that cannot be improved without some sort of surgery. A tummy tuck will address these issues by removing excess skin and fat and tightening loose abdominal muscles.
What You Need to Know About the Tummy Tuck Procedure
When you come in for your tummy tuck consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons, we will carefully analyze your physical condition and listen to your expectations. Remember, the tummy tuck is only intended to tighten skin and repair the abdominal wall. If you are also struggling with stubborn areas of excess fat, we may recommend combining liposuction with your tummy tuck in order to achieve the best possible results.
Your surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, and it will take about 2-5 hours to complete the procedure. We will begin by making a horizontal incision below your belly button where any future scarring can be easily hidden beneath your underwear or a bikini. Excess tissue and skin are removed, loose abdominal muscles are tightened, and the incision will be closed with sutures.
What Will the Recovery Period Be Like after My Tummy Tuck Surgery?
You should be able to return home after your surgery, but have a loved one there to drive you. The effects of the anesthesia will continue to linger for some time and all you will want to do after your procedure is take a nice, long nap.
Some discomfort such as swelling, soreness, numbness, bruising or tiredness can be associated with tummy tuck surgery but should subside in several weeks. Our plastic surgeons may place surgical drains at your incision sites to prevent excess fluids from building up. We will also provide you with a special compression garment to help assist with the healing process and to minimize any swelling.
You should be back to work in about 2-4 weeks, and should refrain from any strenuous activity for about six weeks or until you have fully healed.
