You’ve probably heard of BOTOX® Cosmetic, the number one selling treatment of its kind. However, it’s not the only injectable wrinkle relaxer. At Renaissance Plastic Surgery, our medical spa also offers Dysport® and Xeomin®. These injectables diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles much like BOTOX® Cosmetic does, but with a few subtle differences.
How Injectable Wrinkle Relaxers Work
BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport and Xeomin are all made from a botulinum toxin. This active ingredient temporarily stops facial contractions that can cause expression lines over time; it also softens existing creases.
Unlike BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport, Xeomin only contains botulinum toxin. Known as a “naked injectable,” it has no additives. This makes Xeomin a good option in the rare case that your body builds up a tolerance to BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport.
While the specific way each injectable treats your wrinkles is partly based on the ingredients it contains, all three are:
- Safe
- Effective
- Non-invasive
- Accompanied by minimal side effects
Most importantly, they can all help you achieve a younger, more vibrant appearance.
A Treatment for Your Expression Lines
Botulinum toxin targets three major types of expression lines:
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines
- Crow’s feet
BOTOX® Cosmetic treats all three types of lines. Dysport and Xeomin are most commonly used to treat moderate to severe frown lines. However, Dysport and Xeomin can also be used to smooth out more moderate forehead lines and crow’s feet.
In addition to the ingredients in an injectable, the way in which these ingredients diffuse in your body will affect the quantity used and the location where it’s administered. Since Dysport has a wide range of diffusion, it’s especially effective for people with a high concentration of crow’s feet or other small wrinkles.
During your initial consultation, our aestheticians will help you determine which injectable is right for you. If you have additional signs of facial aging not caused by muscular contractions, they may suggest dermal fillers as well.
Your Injectable Wrinkle Treatment Appointment
While BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport and Xeomin each treat signs of facial aging in slightly different ways, the treatment process for all three is the same. Regardless of which injectable you choose, you’ll visit us for a quick in-office appointment and will be ready to return to work and other daily activities right away.
Treatment typically lasts around 10 minutes and feels like you are being pinched. The results of BOTOX® Cosmetic tend to appear 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Dysport results can take two to three days to appear, and Xeomin results may not appear until four days. This may be something to consider if you’re seeking treatment before an event or special occasion.
Results for all three injectables generally last three to four months. Since results are not permanent, you do have the ability to try more than one type of injectable. We will ultimately recommend what we believe is best for your needs.
